The MAG Museum is located inside the Rocca of Riva del Garda. La Rocca is the ancient medieval mirror castle on Lake Garda.
The museum has three sections:
- permanent
- spaces reserved for temporary exhibitions
- INvento workshop-course aimed at children and families
In the art gallery you can admire the landscapes of Garda. Among the nineteenth century painters there are paintings by Pietro Ricchi, Vincenzo Vela and Francesco Hayez.
In the section dedicated to archeology there are the famous stele statues, precious finds of international importance dating back to the Copper Age. Going through the rooms dedicated to history, the past of Riva del Garda and Basso Sarca emerges, characterized by various dominations including those of the Scaligera, Visconti and Venetians, until the golden period in which Riva del Garda became a tourist destination for illustrious guests such as Thomas Mann and Franz Kafka, to conclude with the events of the First and Second World War which involved the Sommolago area.
In an exhibition itinerary that flanks the permanent sections, temporary installations are deployed throughout the year which offer both in-depth information on the collections and insights into the vision of the landscape and contemporary culture.
INvento is instead a space dedicated to children and families, conceived with the aim of learning while having fun. It consists of a permanent laboratory path, equipped with educational islands and creative games.
For those who visit the Museum, a must is the climb to the Mastio, the main tower of the fortress from which a suggestive image of the city and Lake Garda opens up. An enchanting view can also be found from the top of the Apponale Tower, reachable from the Museum with a short walk in the historic center.
This museum is part of the Rete Trentino Grande Guerra which promotes collaboration between those who cultivate a passion for history and the memory of those events.
