The oolite quarries are excavated in the bumps of Vastrè. The extracted stone is called “statuary stone”. Since it is easy to work with, in the past it was mainly used for portals, fountain and statues.

Use of stone extracted from Massone’s oolite quarries

With the stone extracted from the quarries are made statues that adorn the Taro Bridge in Parma, the fountain of Piazza Duomo in Trento, the statues that adorn the Prato della Valle di Padova, some statues that are located in the Collegiate Church of Arco and the statue of Moses which is located in the square of Arco.

Inside the quarry the extraction plans are inclined about 30 to the west and in the middle there are rock columns that are used to prevent the roof from collapsing. Stopping you can see the marks of the stonemasons.

Along the roof of the quarries it is easy to find signs of climbing routes and often find people there to climb.
