Descrizione

The church of Sant’Abbondio is located on a hill north of the town of Dro. You can reach it with a nice walk. There has been news of the church since 1485.

The building is oriented to the east. It has a single rectangular nave with a longitudinal major axis. The presbyter is rectangular in shape. The gabled façade is bordered by lateral buttresses. It has an architraved portal flanked by two rectangular windows and a circular summit oculus. Presbytery and holy arch have frescoes from the mid-sixteenth century.

Duting the plague of 1630 the community of Dro survives the epidemic. In 1632, the inhabitants made a solemn vow to San Sebastiano and San Rocco. They undertake to celebrate, on the first Saturday of each month for the rest of the year, a procession to the church of Sant’Abbondio and a mass in honor of the saints. The event has been the subject of a historical re-enactment since 1993, called “of the vow of St. Abbondio or of the 12 Saturdays”, which takes place in the last week of May.
