Descrizione

The church of Nago, although it is documented only from 1203, is one of the oldest in Trentino. It is dedicated to St. Vigilius who at the end of the fourth century had been appointed bishop of the diocese of Trento by St. Ambrose of Milan.

The current building dates back to the end of the sixteenth century as recalled by the date 1599 legible on the facade. On this occasion the orientation of the church was also reversed by 180 degrees, so the current entrance is located in the site of the ancient apse. In 1949 the choir and transept were added. Inside there are valuable baroque altars. In the transept are placed the two statues of S. Giuseppe and S. Francesco di Sales, which before the works of 1949 were placed above the two side doors of the high altar.

They recall Don Giuseppe and Don Francesco, two brother priests of the Barcelli family, who generously financed the main altar factory. For this reason, on the aforementioned Doricine are also noted the coat of arms dela loro famala on which I know or engraved the initials of their names. The rich portal is decorated with the insignia of Cardinal Ludovico Madruzzo (1532-1600), prince-bishop of Trento.

In the niche above it and placed a wooden statue – modern COD12 of the original of the sixteenth century that was withdrawn . depicting a bishop, Traditionally identified with St. Vigilius. Probably belonged to the old church the bas-relief depicting Archangel Gabriel, walled in the medieval bell tower. Near the building there are also some tombstones of the ancient cemetery that surrounded the church until the first half of the nineteenth century. One of them recalls Lorenzo Contarini, son of the castellan of Pénede, who died in 1471, and is also decorated with the coat of arms of the noble Venetian family.
