Descrizione
Church of San Rocco built following a vow expressed by the inhabitants of Riva against the plague exploded in 1512. Between 1660 and 1701 it was enlarged and commissioned a large embellishment. The dome and the apse were frescoed by Santo Miola, the splendid stuccoes were the work of Giacomo Eccher.
The altar made with colored stones from the Trentino quarries of Castione at the foot of Monte Baldo. In the sacristy were placed a wooden predella of the altar with a rare representation of the city of Riva, an altarpiece by Teofilo Polacco (1570 c. – 1639) dedicated to the saint and a wooden statue of particular finesse, now preserved in the Riva del Garda Museum.
During the First World War a bomb hit the building; only the apse and the altar were saved, with damage to the stucco and at the time. The urban reconstruction of Giancarlo Maroni and the recent restorations have allowed the recovery of the valuable stuccoes and the furnishings of the altar.
