The Church of San Martino, in the homonymous hamlet of Arco, stands on a hill overlooking the Sarca Valley, and was founded before the current town, as a place of worship of the village of Preioi or Priole, of which today there is no trace, but that must have been located a little more inside, in the area now known as Policromuro; already in Roman times the site was intended for burials (as evidenced by the discovery of two tombs with equipment on the occasion of the enlargement of the church in 1924). Probably, due to the geographical position and the place names linked to the place, the area could also be a place of pagan worship, perhaps dedicated to Diana, and only later destined for Christian worship. : Traditionally it is reported that the ancient church, much smaller than today, and an adjoining monastery were kept by Benedictine monks still in the ninth century.
