Descrizione

The fort of Nago was a defensive system of Alto Garda. A barrier aimed at cutting the Nago-Passo San Giovanni-Mori-Rovereto route. At the time of their construction, the Maza road from Nago down to Arco did not yet exist.

The forts were built between 1860 and 1861. The two forts of Nago were what the Austrian military strategists considered the best technological solution at the time. There was a fort on the road supported by another fort above. The same strategic solution was repeated at the gates of Trento with the construction of the forts of Cadine and in the Giudicarie with the forts Larino and Revegler.

The forts

The two forts consist of unarmed casemates. They are of limestone well worked with a chisel and lime. The forts are set on two floors and have two overlapping lines of gunboats. At the top of the fort are the garrison quarters. The fort was equipped with 6 10 cm guns M 63, 4 12 cm guns M 73 and a 15 cm howitzer M 61.
The lower fort served as a cut and blocked the road with a gate. His armament consisted of 2 guns of 10 cm. The two works were connected by a staircase, interrupted by a powder magazine. The garrison was 5 officers and 148 men.

The Fort of Nago was assisted by the “Sagron Battery” (1880-1881, demolished in 1900), located on the last foothills of Mount Baldo, in a dominant position the fort itself.

Considered obsolete at the outbreak of the Italo-Austrian conflict, the forts of Nago were disarmed and artillery were placed in caves and in a secluded position nearby.
