Descrizione

Lake Loppio is certainly one of the most famous biotopes in Trentino. It is located on the road from Rovereto to Lake Garda. Until 1958 it was a fairly large lake.

Origin of the lake of Loppio

The lake of Loppio originated because of a double barrier. A large landslide closed the north-western side, while the Gresta river with its materials blocked the opposite side. Lake Loppio was established in the basin.

A bit of history

Between 1939 and 1940 and from 1954 to 1959 a tunnel was dug between the Adige river and Lake Garda, called Adige-Garda. This tunnel was designed to pour into Lake Garda the excess waters of the river Adige during flooding. This idea avoided the danger of flooding for the Adige valley and the city of Verona. The tunnel passes under the lake of Loppio and during the works was intercepted the aquifer that fed it and also the groundwater connected to it. In a short time the lake emptied without filling.

Sant’Andrea island

A few meters from the shore of the lake, walking on the bike path is the island of Sant’Andrea. You can reach the island and make a beautiful loop route and take a trip through history. On the island there is a beautiful archaeological site that goes from prehistory to the late Roman era to the Middle Ages until the First World War. There are the remains of some buildings from the late/early medieval period and on the hill the ruins of the Romanesque church of Sant’Andrea.
