Descrizione
The Marmitte dei Giganti are just a few minutes’ walk from Torbole sul Garda. Place you can also reach by parking the car a few minutes walk. The excursion to the potholes, or glacial wells are worth the walk. Potholes that are of glacial origin.
From a geological point of view it must be considered that in the last phase of the Neozoic era or also called quaternary (Würm) the area was covered with ice. The Neozoic era is characterized by recurrent glaciations. Glacial wells were formed millions of years ago by rock erosion due to melting water from glaciers.
The glacial wells are formed by the melting waters of the glacier that, precipitating in the crevasses, cause a swirling and fast movement of pebbles. This swirling motion and the pebbles have slowly eroded the rock giving it this shape. The glacial wells in the area are among the most well-known and famous of the whole chain of the Alps. Antonio Stoppani, geologist and paleontologist, studied and described them in his most famous work “Il Bel Paese”.
In prehistoric times they were inhabited, as evidenced by the findings of some arrowheads and ceramic fragments dated between the fourth and third millennium B.C.
