Descrizione
In the area of Lake Garda during the last years of the Great War, a Czechoslovakian unit, the second company of the 39th with the name “Avio”, operated within the Italian 29th Army Corps.
Two Czechs who had passed with the Italians were also part of it, Corporal Alois Storch and Officer Frantisek Tobek. The action plan envisaged that the two Czech soldiers would leave from Malcesine and from there they would overcome the barriers and enter Austrian territory.
The landing occurred on the night between 2 and 3 July 1918 at the mouth of the Sarca. The soldiers were discovered by the Austrian patrols and tried to escape by swimming. Tobek saved himself by swimming to the Italian lines in Buon Porto, Storch was captured by an Austrian patrol. Storch was recognized as a deserter and sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out at half past two in the morning on July 5, 1918.
In retaliation, General Graziani, commander of the Czechoslovak division, ordered a massive bombardment on the defenseless city of Riva and on the site of the hanging of the unfortunate Storch.
