Descrizione
Santa Maria del Pernone is one of the oldest churches in Alto Garda. This is confirmed by the excavations carried out under the floor of the apse during the restoration.
From the excavations some tombs emerged which recall the age of Theodosius (5th and 6th century AD) in their layout and location. A pre-Romanesque frieze found inside the bell tower also confirms this period
The church is dedicated to Maria del Perdono and is mentioned in the statutes of 1274. The church remained active for centuries, even if its furnishings and building were in decline. Conspicuous interventions were made in the 18th century. The curacy, the baptismal font and the cemetery are built.
In the 19th century, repeated damage to the church due to flooding from the stream led to the decision to build a new church in the center of the town of Varone. The ancient church was thus abandoned and is currently deconsecrated.
The church of Santa Maria del Pernone has a single hall, is marked by three cross bays and a circular apse. On the left side stands the bell tower which was originally open onto the presbytery.
