The sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie is located in the hamlet of Ceole in the municipality of Arco.
News of the foundation stone of the church and convent in Ceole. Dedicated to Our Lady of Grace are 1478. In the following years there are Franciscan friars present. The construction was commissioned by Count Francesco d’Arco. Begun in 1490 and completed in 1492 with its first solemn consecration.
On 11 June 1508 the three-year truce between Maximilian I of Habsburg, Louis XII of France and the Republic of Venice was signed in the convent. In the 16th century the church hall was enlarged. In 1675 the choir section was enlarged.
At the beginning of the XIX-th century the convent was suppressed due to the invasion of the Napoleonic troops. The restoration was resumed in 1815 and is open to worship.
Half 1800
In the mid-1800s, the church’s roof was built. A few years later, the old building was demolished and rebuilt. The church is rebuilt in the same location with the same foundations. The side chapels have different location.
The area of the temple is raised almost 3 meters. This to prevent possible flooding of the stream Bordellino. In 1869 the bishop of Trento Benedetto Riccabona de Reichenfels celebrates the consecration of the church. Later the nave is decorated with wall paintings by Gaetano Degiacomi. Paintings of the cycle dedicated to the stories of the life of the Madonna. At the beginning of the 20th century the bell tower is elevated.
During the First World War the church was damaged. In 1938 the interior of the building was decorated and frescoed by Pino Casarini. After World War II, the façade is decorated with terracotta bas-reliefs. The large bronze door is placed. Door made of bronze and terracotta tiles on the facade, the work of the sculptor Fra’ Silvio Bottes, who was resident in the convent.
In 1976 the earthquake caused damage to the church. Restoration and consolidation works that lasted a few years are needed.
The last conservative interventions were in the eighties and in 2000, with the painting of the facade, the electrification of the movement of the bells and the renewal of various plants.
Outside
Rebuilt in neoclassical style the facade of the church has side salients and in the central part four pilasters in Ionic style support a reduced order with a large half-moon window in the center and, at the top, the pediment.
Interiors
Inside the main altar in baroque marble is the work of Giacomo and Cristoforo Benedetti di Castione, that realized the project of Andrea Pozzo. In the niche there is the wooden sculpture Madonna enthroned with Child, probably by an artist from Verona.
