Descrizione
The archaeological site of Monte San Martino is located in Campi, a locality north-west of Riva del Garda. The site is located on Mount San Martino.
Campi can be reached from Alto Garda following the signs for Campi. Once you reach the town centre you can park near the church or the sports field and take a nice walk to the archaeological site of Monte San Martino or continue to Malga Grassi and park in the back at the beginning of the path.
You take the path in the woods, after parking the car and immediately find, along the way of the figures carved in wood.
The archaeological site of Monte San Martino has a first area, in the highest part and is a place of pre-Roman worship (III-I century BC). Visible remains are part of the Roman sanctuary. In the 1st century B.C. the pre-Roman place of worship became a Roman sanctuary (1st century B.C.-4th century A.D.). The building stood overhanging the mountain.
Next stop is the village, a real village characterized by numerous houses. It developed from the fourth century. Inside the village there was a system of roads between the houses. The position from above makes me understand the real distribution of houses, what a show.
Southern Zone. The structures visible in this area belong to buildings of different eras, from the late Antiquity (IV – V century AD) to the Middle Ages and modern. The oldest part consists of other houses of the village of which only a cistern, some small rooms and a staircase are preserved.
The church is located in a beautiful panoramic position on the village of Campi di Riva del Garda. The church has a rectangular plan (7.5 x 3.5 m) dedicated to the bishop of Tours. It was used until the sixteenth century and was razed to the ground in 1710. Along the perimeter wall were found numerous tombs.
