Descrizione
Built between 1860 and 1861 on the Riva-Torbole coastal road, Forte San Nicolò is the first fort of the Riva del Garda barrier, designed to block access to Tyrol from Lake Garda. From the Austrians it was called “Strandbatterie”, a beach battery, a testimony to the anti-sbarco function. Fort San Nicolò was expanded and modernized between 1911 and 1913, using reinforced concrete. The fort had a cut with an iron door that closed the road Riva-Torbole. At the outbreak of world war, the fort served as a warehouse.
The fort is currently used as the headquarters of the Lake Garda Study Centre and the company Lido di Riva del Garda. Outside there are a series of gardens and there are posts in the gallery now abandoned that represent the ideal place from which to start a visit to the system of fortifications of Mount Brione.
